Who are we and why would you want to join us for a Tour?

Sonny Boys Tours is dedicated to providing quality Eco-tours, scenic tours and information on the subject of Wild Horses and in particular, to educate the public on the need for protection and preservation of the American Mustang!

There are few remaining wild horses out on open ranges. Each year in the West, thousands of horses are gathered or rounded-up in the attempt to thin the size of herds for a variety of reasons. Sonny Boys Tours goal is to give guided eco-tours of wild horses for small groups, to view, encounter mustangs, and gain an understanding about the mustano equis (wild horses and burros).

In the course of providing tours, visitors have marveled at the rugged beauty of the region. As a result, we have expanded our service to offer unique scenic tours that capture the spirit of the West!

We just want you to know that we can also customize tours for larger groups.

You can navigate through the site by using the tabs at the top of the web site to see each page. Also, don’t hesitate to follow the links along the side of the pages to learn more about the different organizations responsible for wild horse stewardship.

Feel free to drop me an email at sonny@renowildhorsetours.com or call (775) 200-5205. I hope you find the information that I provide valuable and helpful.

All the best,

Tina Brodrick

CLIMATE

TEMPERATURES
Daily winter temperatures can range from -5°F to 45°F. In the summer, they range from the 40°F to 105°F. We are “high desert here and the nights are almost always cool, all year round.
SNOWFALL
Contrary to popular belief, Northern Nevada has four seasons of weather. We definitely get snow and the summers are hot, but not like the Las Vegas area. We can get up to a foot of snow on the ground (highest recorded in Reno was once 31″) and the summer record is 108°F, but usually its around 90-95°F.
RAINFALL
Northern Nevada only gets around 5 INCHES of Rain per year. One thing that amazes most people though is how incredibly dry it is here. Bring lotion and lip balm because if you’re not used to it, it can be quite disconcerting no matter what season you visit. The winds can be strong, too, so come prepared.

FAQS

What should I wear?

The Sierra-Nevada region has a variety of seasons. You should dress according to the temperatures. The spring (March, April and May) can have temperatures ranging from 60 degrees up to 80 degrees during the day. The summer months are much hotter ranging from 70 degrees up to 100+. Throughout June, July and August the heat can be physically draining, and light clothing is recommended. September, October and November can also be hot or cool, however, the start of fall brings more moderate weather. The winter months of December, January and February are frequently cold with temperatures ranging from a high in the 40’s and lows in the 20’s. Closed toes shoes are a must! We get out of the vehicle in areas that are dirt and rock, not to mention the little critters that could bite or sting. Remember too, the higher elevations and dryer climate require you to keep hydrated!

Will we be able to touch the horses?

The only location where you will be able to actually touch the wild horses is at Palomino Valley. The mustangs are part of the BLM training programs, and some of the horses are gentle enough to have contact with humans. Keep in mind that horses are large animals. Always use your senses and be watchful of the horse’s reactions. You don’t want to inadvertently get in the middle of two horses that get mad at each other! Horses are known to bite and kick each other as part of their social behavior.

If I can’t make the tour day, can I get a refund?

If you must cancel, you need to do so 48 hours before the time of your designated tour. No refunds will be issued for cancellations shorter than 48 hours.

Is there a lot of walking?

Most of the tours have designated areas where you will get out and stretch your legs. The ground is usually not paved and can be uneven. Closed toed shoes are recommended and wear something you wouldn’t worry about getting a little dirty.

Is there horseback riding available?

There is no horseback riding involved on the tour. You will travel in an SUV equipped with four-wheel drive.
