Bronze Mustang
A committee meeting April 23 & 24, 2012 BLM meets with Advisory Committee at the Grand Sierra Resort (GSR) in Reno, NV. The topic – Wild Horse and Burro Program. Many items of concern for the American Mustang were discussed. The bottom line seems to be the BLM is hell-bent on removing horses from the range. This bronze statue of the mustangs in front of GSR may be the [...]
Technology escapes me
The spirit of the wild West Well, try as I might, sometimes technology escapes me! Hopefully you’ll keep opening up messages from Sonny Boys Tours. The simple thing I want to share is simply the spirit of what captures our hearts and imaginations — the American Mustang. To keep up-to-date with information sources on the latest happenings, please visit Sonny Boys Tours on Facebook. The mustang in the back [...]
Half Moon Mare
Tragedy in the desert Sometimes life doesn’t turn out like we hope it will. On our tour last week, we came upon a stallion and mare along our travels. The mare was lying down, and it didn’t look good. As we moved closer, it was evident that she had tried to give birth to a foal, but nothing was really happening. Her mate tried to nudge her and nip [...]
Winter turns to Spring
Prehistoric Stallion This Ice Age stallion about 25,000 years old, a native to North America, can be seen at Carson City’s Nevada State Museum. This superb fossil was discovered in 1985 near Pyramid Lake. In the middle of winter, issues surrounding the wild horses are heating up. We can only hope that the Western American Mustang that we know and love does not go by way of his ancestors. [...]
Happy New Year and Happy Valentines!
Some updates on Sonny We’ve been working on the back end of our system during the down time of our eco-tour season. Sonny Boys Tours celebrated one year of service and the birth of “Sonny” (pictured above). It is a rare occasion to see a foal being born in the wild. He is now just barely four months old, and he’s growing every day! We had some issues with [...]
Orse of a Diffn’ Coulor
A very distinctive horse A MUST see at Palomino Valley near Reno, NV. This distinctive young colt has a curious coloring that is extremely rare. At first glance, the markings are similar to the mule. However, his ears are definitely horse. Somehow this young mustang who was rounded up in Eastern Nevada in August 2011, made his way from the Northwest. Maybe he is a throwback to the Keiger [...]
What a day for a daydream
What beauty! A day dream can be a real awake dream come true to see the beauty of the mustangs as they move throughout their day. They capture our imagination and give us an exhilarating sight just by being who they are. Sharing a moment with a mare and her foal is a visceral experience that will never be forgotten.
Water for Wild Horses
Its very important Some people argue that wild horses do damage to riparian areas and wetlands. Who really does more damage to the wetlands – horses or man? The developers in this area continue to fill-in these water sources, to build structures – houses, box stores – leaving no room for the horses. Encroachment cuts off the mustangs from much needed water and food.
Strange but Wonderful
Something happened today The strangest thing happened on the way to our tour today. Our visitors wanted to see both the horses at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Palomino Valley AND horses out in the wild – or on the range. When we arrived at the BLM adoption center, there were no horses! Well, there were a few, however usually there are at least 800 or more [...]
A Mustang 4th of July
This is a subtitle for your new post If you’ve never ridden a horse in the Virginia City 4th of July Parade, you’ve missed an experience. You get to Ride up side streets congested with traffic to get to the staging area, a narrow main street (C Street) with cars parked on both sides and spectators on the roadside between the cars and the horses, and lots of noise [...]
The West As It Was – Almost
The West As It Was - Almost The West As It Was can be seen at the Reno Rodeo. This picture of a mule-drawn covered wagon shows life as it was. Note our ‘covered wagon’ of today driving in the opposite direction!

Grass is Greener
Green Grass = Danger Grass is greener on the other side – but also more dangerous for these wild horses. Horse power of automobiles and wild horse power make a dangerous combination. Maybe some cattle guards and fencing might help. When driving, be alert when you see this sign – the wild horse can’t read – but you can. Drive safe!

Truckee River on Paiute Reservation
The Snake War Along the way back from our tour to Palomino Valley and Pyramid Lake, we stopped at the historic site of the battle of “Snake War” fought in 1860.
